Guide for students from Canada

Hi, I’m Armita

I wanted to study in England because here, unlike in Canada, it’s possible to study law straight after high school. After I complete my studies in England, I can take further examinations back home to be an accredited lawyer there. It’s a much shorter route and the added bonus, of course, is that you get to live and study in another country.

This is what I’ve learnt so far…

Campus comforts.

At home I’m used to being surrounded by nature and I was a little bit afraid the campus would just be lots of brick. But I really like the campus, it has a very modern feel and is also very green – beautiful flowers and cute little animals, like hedgehogs! Being surrounded by nature is important to me and gives me peace of mind.

I live in uni accommodation on campus, which means everything is nearby. I feel very safe here too. My first set of close friends were the people I lived with, we all learnt from each other.

Invest in your future.

I chose law because I want to be a lawyer, but I also write music and I love to perform. In Canada there is a demand for entertainment lawyers, so an option for me could be to combine my love for entertaining with my professional skills and move into that area of law. Being able to combine the two would be perfect.

I know that deciding to study overseas is a big decision, but I do think particularly for law it’s an investment worth making. You need to take a long-term view. Studying in Canada to be a lawyer takes seven to eight years, if you take into account all the money you’d spend in that time, it’s similar to what you’d pay to study here. I think it’s really worth it to come here because I really am having the time of my life while learning something I enjoy, and I can say that my studies are an important step towards my career goals.

Friends in many places.

People here are really friendly and it’s very multicultural, so you get to meet people from all over the world. When you’re settling into a new country, it’s good to share that experience with other people who are in the same position as you. I’ve enjoyed discovering different cultures, as well as British culture which, I discovered, is intriguingly layered.

Joining sports teams and societies is a great way to make friends and university is the perfect time to try things out. When you think about it, after university it may not be as easy to take part in sports or hobbies you love, or to try out new things. So, get involved and find your community.

I think it’s important to find friends who are interested in the same things as you are and have the same goals as you. I find if I’m with people who are on top of their studies, that helps me to be on top of my studies. It’s important to have friends who have that balance between work and fun.

History on your doorstep.

Canterbury is really cute, it’s very different to what I’m used to in Vancouver, so every time I go there, I feel excited. I’m always discovering new parts of the city and noticing things I haven’t seen before. I just love historic buildings and learning about them is really interesting. It’s amazing.

When I first came to Kent, my mom came with me and we took a tour of the city and went into the Cathedral. It was good for my mom to see that the place where I’d be living is a safe city.
