Dr Giuseppe Maglione

Dr Maglione joined the School of Social Policy, Sociology and Social Research in September 2021, after a spell at Napier University in Edinburgh, having also taught at the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow. He teaches criminological and criminal justice subjects on a range of undergraduate and postgraduate modules.

Dr Maglione received a PhD in Legal Theory and History of Law from the University of Florence, where he also graduated cum laude in law, as well as professional certificates in mediation, conflict management and restorative justice awarded by e.g. IPSI & The Johns Hopkins University (SAIS) and Humboldt University of Berlin. He has been a visiting researcher at the University of Oslo, Cambridge, Durham, KU Leuven, as well as at the Max Planck Institute in Freiburg and at the International Institute for the Sociology of Law.

Before becoming a full-time academic, Dr Maglione worked as a legal advisor in prisons, victim-offender mediator, community mediator and trainer in conflict management/mediation for private and public organizations (Police, Social workers, Healthcare professionals etc.) in Italy, Norway and Scotland. 

Dr Maglione’s main research interests are around penal politics, restorative justice, conflict mediation, penal abolitionism and anarchism. He likes to think that his passion around these subjects arose from his experience as a legal advisor in prisons in the early 2000s, when he encountered for the first time the bare violence of penal institutions. To some extent this encounter has never ended, still fuelling his work on overcoming the necessity of penal punishment. 

His papers have been published in international journals (e.g. Theoretical Criminology, European Journal of Criminology, Theory & Society, Criminology & Criminal Justice, Critical Criminology, Social & Legal Studies etc.) and presented at national and international conferences.

Currently, his research work revolves around three interlinked poles:

• A socio-legal analysis of the incorporation of restorative justice into penal policy. In this area, Dr Maglione is currently editing with Dr Ian Marder (Maynooth University) and Dr Brunilda Pali (University of Amsterdam) a collection on the institutionalisation of restorative justice which will be published in 2024 by Routledge.

• The development of a radical political philosophy of restorative justice drawing particularly from Gilles Deleuze and Giorgio Agamben. Dr Maglione is writing a book monograph on this subject which will be published in 2024 by Routledge within the ‘Frontier of Criminal Justice’ series. 

• The elaboration of a post-anarchist criminology. This area concerns the possible contribution of recent strands within philosophical anarchism to the critical re-conceptualisation of the relations between state, criminalisation and punishment. Dr Maglione is currently working on a UKRI Future Leader Fellowship on this subject.

He uses a critical pedagogical approach to teaching and is particularly interested in clinical education (learning-by-doing, scenarios, role plays etc).

Dr Maglione is also the director of the Restorative Justice Clinical Program, an innovative suite of experiential learning activities, based at the University of Kent, which includes the first Restorative Justice Clinic in the UK, a restorative justice summer school and a cross campus optional module.   

Dr Maglione is keen on supervising empirical qualitative and historical-philosophical (eg drawing on Walter Benjamin, Michel Foucault, Gilles Deleuze and Giorgio Agamben) research projects on restorative justice, conflict mediation and penal punishment. 

Dr Maglione has been External Examiner at Royal Holloway, University of London, University of Bradford and Sheffield Hallam University, as well as External Academic Panel Member for the Subject Review and Re-validation of Criminology programs at the University of Huddersfield.

He frequently peer reviews both research grants applications (for the Danish Ministry of Education, Research Foundation Flanders, Carnegie Trust, ESRC, AHRC etc.) and journal/book proposals (for Critical Criminology, Contemporary Justice Review, Journal of Youth Studies, International Review of Victimology, International Journal of Restorative Justice, Teaching and Teacher Education, etc.)

He is a member of the Socio-Legal Studies Association (SLSA), the International Association for Conflict Management and the European Group for the Study of Deviance and Social Control.

He sits on the Research Committee of The European Forum for Restorative Justice and is the Eastern Arc University Champion for the University of Kent for the Human Rights, Equality and Conflict theme.
