About the Wates Foundation

The Wates Foundation are an independent grant-making family trust, founded in 1966 by three brothers from a building family: Allan, Norman, and Ronald Wates.

As generalist grant-makers, the Foundation has funded projects relating to families and parenting, young people's education and employment, criminal justice and prison reform, housing and homelessness, women's rights and wellbeing, health and addiction, and migration and citizenship.

Today, the Foundation's six trustees are drawn equally from the three branches of the Wates Family. Each of the three families has its own grants committee, which usually meets once a year. The three family grants committees are named after their respective founder.
