About

Philippa Bruce is a Senior Lecturer and Co-Director of Kent Law Clinic, where she has developed extensive expertise in clinical legal education over more than a decade. Drawing on her background in private practice specialising in family law and legal aid work — including advocacy for parents and children in care proceedings — she brings significant frontline legal experience to her teaching and supervision.

As Co-Director, Philippa oversees the work of the Clinic as a whole, while continuing to undertake casework for clients and supervising students working on cases involving complex disputes over children.

Research interests

Philippa's research interests lie in clinical legal education, and in particular the potential for experiential learning to be embedded more broadly across the law curriculum. She is interested in how direct engagement with real legal problems and clients can enrich students' understanding of law in practice.

Teaching

Philippa is involved in the convening and teaching of three popular Law School modules: Family Law (LAWS6760) and the Clinical Option (LAWS6670 and LAWS6680). She also provides supervision on some undergraduate research project modules. She has a particular interest in issues currently affecting the Family Justice System and in exploring with students how these issues impact upon individuals involved in family disputes.
