Research interests

Charlie is a historian of Britain and Europe in the early and central Middle Ages (c.700–1250). His research explores cultural and intellectual history, and in particular the literary genres of historical writing in Europe, c.500–1150. It aims to understand how and why authors engaged with the past, using original manuscripts, edited texts and material objects to identify how historical compositions informed contemporary discourses in politics, religious life, gender roles, and cross-cultural relations. Charlie’s first book appeared in 2020, titled Writing History in the Community of St Cuthbert c.700–1130.

Teaching

Charlie teaches undergraduate and postgraduate courses in the early and central medieval history of Europe.
