Meet the Team

We are responsible for a wide range of activities including staff engagement, communications, behaviour change and embedding sustainability across the University. We also jointly manage the University's Environmental Management System in conjunction with the Safety, Health and Environment Unit.

We work closely with other sections of the Estates department as well as individuals and departments from across the institution in both academic schools and professional service departments.

Sustainability Team

In a dual-role split between the Safety, Health and Environment Unit and Estates Department, Catherine leads on the development and operation of the Universities Environmental Management System including ensuring legal compliance, managing the internal audit schedule and advising staff on Strategy development, environmental best practice and setting of targets and KPIs. In addition to this, Catherine sits on the Environmental Sustainability Team and leads on the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals across the University.

Emily’s main role is the development and implementation of the University’s behaviour change programme FutureProof. Emily is also responsible for coordinating the new Oasis Community Garden and for a wide range of engagement and communication activities in partnership with Schools and Departments across the University. Emily is also a lead auditor for the EMS internal audit team.

Helen Ellis

Deputy Director

About

Helen has senior management responsibility for a number of sections of the Estates Department including Carbon Management and Sustainability. Helen also represents the Estates Department on the Environmental Sustainability Team.

John Kingsland

Head of Energy and Environment

About

John is Head of Section for Energy and Environment in the Estates Department. His main role is focused on management of energy and water and John’s responsibilities include the development and implementation of the Carbon and Water management Strategies. John is also a member of the Environmental Sustainability Team and auditor for the EMS internal audit team.

Michele Gill

Waste and Cleaning Manager

About

Michele manages the waste team and is responsible for development and operation of the waste strategy as well as managing all of our waste contractors.

Emma Dimond

FM Coorinator (Waste and Recycling)

About

Emma is responsible for the day-to-day management of waste and recycling including provision of facilities, promotions and ensuring legal compliance. Emma is also involved with the University’s re-use scheme WARP-IT and auditor for the EMS internal audit team.

Juliet Thomas

Assistant Director (Facilities Management)

About

Juliet has senior management responsibility for Facilities Management in the Estates Department including the Waste and Grounds teams. Juliet is also an active member of the Environmental Sustainability Team.

Richard Cottam

Head of Facilities Management

About

Richard is Head of Section for facilities Management in the Estates Department. His responsibilities include overseeing development and implementation of the Waste and Biodiversity Strategies.

Teresa Curteis

Head of Traffic Management and Travel

About

Teresa manages the transport team as well as leading on the University’s travel plans for Canterbury and Medway. Teresa’s team are a one-stop-shop for all things transport including the provision of facilities for and the promotion of sustainable transport.

Paul Griffiths

Grounds Maintenance Manager

About

As head of the Grounds Maintenance section, Paul is responsible for development and operation of the Biodiversity and Landscape Strategy. Paul’s team also proactively manage the woodlands, grasslands and ponds on campus for Biodiversity.

Bernard Angus

Director

About

Bernard has senior management responsibility for the University’s Environmental Management System and acts as Chair of the Environmental Sustainability Team.

 

Andrew Briggs

Fire Safety and Environment Adviser

About

Andrew’s responsibilities include development of the Environmental Management System and as convenor of the Environmental Sustainability Team. Andrew is also a lead auditor for the EMS internal audit team.

 

Kent Hospitality

Tim Burrows

Operations Manager

About

Tim has senior management responsibility for Kent Hospitality catering and leads on the development and operation of the Sustainable Food Strategy. Tim is also a member of the Environmental Sustainability Team.

 

Gary Sayles

Executive Manager: Housekeeping

About

Gary has senior management responsibility for Kent Hospitality housekeeping and works closely with the Sustainability and Waste teams on waste reduction, recycling and re-use from campus accommodation. Gary is also a member of the Environmental Sustainability Team.

 

Procurement

Mark Reed

Head of Procurement

About

Procurement of goods and services are some of the University’s most significant aspects. Mark is responsible for development and operation of the new Procurement Strategy which embeds Sustainability into the procurement process. Mark is also a member of the Environmental Sustainability Team.

Ashley Shelbrooke

Procurement Specialist

About

Ashley is responsible for a number of sustainable procurement initiatives including compliance with the Modern Slavery Act and Social Value Act. He is also exploring utilising third-party organisations such as electronics watch and the social value portal to embed social sustainability into the procurement process.
