Undergraduate study

Students in the School of English have the freedom to customise their course according to their interests and passions. Many students choose to take our main degree programme, English Literature, and vary that course by choosing from the broad range of modules from Medieval to contemporary literature. Modules include opportunities to study particular periods of literature such as Modernism or Victorian Literature; particular authors such as the Brontës or Dickens; or concepts such as ‘The Stranger’ or ‘Animals, Humans, Writing’. Students can also choose to take a long essay module in the final year which allows them to research and develop in an area of particular interest. Some students may already have a particular focus to their studies and will choose more specialist routes by augmenting their course with American Literature, Creative Writing or Postcolonial Literature, or by taking our increasingly popular BA in Contemporary Literature.
Many of our degrees can be studied alongside another subject as a joint honours programme, or you can choose to spend an additional year studying abroad or working as part of a placement year. The School of English is a welcoming and supportive environment, the perfect place to pursue your passion for literature and fulfil your academic potential.
