Currently Honorary Researcher, following his retirement in July 2016, Steve was previously a Senior Lecturer in Electronics at the University of Kent for 33 years, Before that, Mr Kelly worked in industry for 14 years
Work in industry covered diverse fields, including broadcast antennas, communications systems for the Home Office and environmental testing, while working for C&S Antennas Ltd and Thorn Radio Valves and Tubes Ltd, between 1969 and 1975. From 1976 to 1983, he worked for GEC Avionics Ltd (now BAE Systems Ltd), in the Flight Automation Research Laboratory. Projects included pilot's head and eye position sensing systems and a multimedia implementation of the service manual for the Boeing 747 aircraft.
Current research is centred around assistive technology (especially semi-autonomous wheelchair control and exoskeleton development) including two Inerreg Va projects, 'EDUCAT' and 'ADAPT'.
Other research interests include: speech assessment (in particular, SNORS+, a clinical, multiparameter, speech workstation for use in Speech & Language Therapy); and swallowing assessment and feedback; Steve is a member of the Kent Speech and Swallowing Research Team.
Mr Kelly is actively involved in the School's 'Health Engineering Network'.
