Marian Chaney

Human Resource Management MSc

I love being in HR. I love the variety it provides. Also, it’s a wonderful role to positively impact an organisation.

What attracted you to Kent and this particular programme?

I was particularly attracted to the programme because it was CIPD accredited. I could tell that it would be a great foundation for me to start my HR career.

How were your studies? Which areas did you find particularly inspiring or interesting?

My studies were quite intense and we covered a lot of material. It was especially interesting to grasp how HRM can truly impact organisational performance and the bottom line.

What did you think of the teaching at Kent?

On the whole, it was excellent. My tutor for my dissertation was very helpful and assisted me in progressing.

Was the course flexible enough to allow you to pursue your interests?

Yes, it was very flexible. There was a requirement to be on campus two or three days a week, therefore leaving other days to pursue your interests. For me, it was spending time with my husband and doing long walks in the Kent countryside.

How would you describe your fellow students?

Fantastic and very diverse. We had students from so many different countries and that gave our programme much more depth. Everyone also really wanted to be there and it was a great group.

How do you think your course has changed you? What did you gain from it?

It allowed me to become the HR professional I am today. I gained so much knowledge ranging from industrial relations to learning and development.

What careers advice did you receive at Kent?

Follow what I’m interested in. There are so many elements to HR and therefore focus on what I’m most passionate about.

In what way has your degree helped you find work/further study?

It was very instrumental in helping me land my first job in HR. Also, it gives you an edge to have the notable University of Kent on your CV.

What do you enjoy about your current work or studies?

I love being in HR. I love the variety it provides; one day is always different from the next. Also, it’s a wonderful role to positively impact an organisation.

Please could you describe your current work? Do you have a typical day?

I’m currently an HR Operations Manager, so a typical day would include advising line managers and senior managers on key people topics, keeping my email inbox in check, running HR reports and creating data to benchmark, and discussing ways to improve the company.

What are your hopes and plans for the future?

I hope to be Head of HR and also work for an international organisation.

Is there any advice you’d like to pass on to prospective Kent students?

All the hours of reading are worth it!
