Emergency Preparedness, Resilience and Response for Healthcare
Preparing future leaders for NHS emergency response challenges.
Key information
Preparing future leaders for NHS emergency response challenges.
Prepare yourself to play a vital role in protecting health services and communities during times of disruption. In an increasingly complex world, healthcare organisations must be ready to respond to emergencies and incidents such as severe weather, infectious disease outbreaks, major transport accidents and other significant events, while continuing to provide safe and effective care for patients.
This course introduces you to the principles and practice of Emergency Preparedness, Resilience and Response (EPRR) within healthcare. You will explore how NHS-funded services and wider healthcare organisations meet their responsibilities under the Civil Contingencies Act 2004, and how emergency planning and business continuity support the delivery of essential services during periods of pressure.
Designed for students who are interested in developing a career in emergency planning or business continuity within healthcare, the course combines academic learning with current professional practice. Technical content is delivered by practising EPRR specialists from a wide range of healthcare organisations, ensuring that your learning reflects contemporary challenges, operational realities and current best practice.
You will have opportunities to apply your learning through participation in a healthcare exercise, helping you to develop practical skills and gain experience of realistic incident response scenarios. Teaching is delivered primarily online, supported by an on-campus workshop and assessed activities that provide valuable in-person learning and professional development opportunities.
In the first year, students undertaking the CPD module are expected to attend an EPRR exercise for one working day and travel to the University of Kent’s Canterbury campus for a two-day workshop with assessment.
In the second year, students undertaking the PGCert module are expected to travel to the University of Kent’s Canterbury campus for one or two working days to complete an assessed presentation.
The following modules are what students will typically study, but this may change year to year in response to new developments and innovations.
Stage 1 (CPD) can stand alone and meets the national expected content and is sufficient for employment.
Compulsory modules currently include the following
This module will provide you with the core skills required to deliver Emergency Preparedness Resilience and Response (EPRR) arrangements in healthcare settings. Through structured online delivery, you will learn key principles and processes used by health commanders, managers and staff responding to incidents as part of an incident management team including risk assessment, emergency planning, training, exercising, command and control, coordination and communication, joint decision making, debriefing, and record keeping. The alignment of these principles will be brought to life with examples of current best practice and case studies. You will apply your knowledge and your practical understanding through a series of live events, implementing your skills at a professional level in the development and delivery of EPRR arrangements in healthcare settings.
You will benefit from the expertise of practicing NHS EPRR staff as well as members of staff at the University of Kent. The course is aligned with the NHS England EPRR Minimum Occupational Standards and has been co-designed with NHS staff working in EPRR roles.
Stage 2 is optional, but required to achieved the full qualfiying requirements for the PgCert.
Optional modules may include the following
How do we apply academic rigour to reviewing and improving emergency procedures, response and planning? EPRR is governed by fixed and well-practiced procedures and legislation, however every incident or event is unique in nature and will generate unexpected short- or long-term challenges.
These result in an increased need for re-assessment, evaluation and adaptation. Be that through the means of legislation changes, scientific input or even sociological or clinical adaptations.
This module provides you with the opportunity to implement the knowledge and skills learned during your CPD and practically engage and contribute to a field that you are passionate about. You will design, conduct, troubleshoot and complete an extensive independent research study in your chosen EPRR field. You will enhance your knowledge by creating a research strategy, critically reviewing the literature and performing data analysis to provide new insights in EPRR.
Much of the learning experience will follow a student-led approach under the direction of both NHS EPRR and academic staff, preparing you for postgraduate studies and a broad range of career pathways.
Those with experience of working in emergency planning/resilience settings or previous employment in this area may be accepted onto the course based on their experience (i.e. work within an emergency responder or military organisation).
For direct entry onto the course, the normal requirement will be the completion of the PGNQUAL Emergency Preparedness, Resilience and Response for Healthcare course.
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)
Students may be admitted to the programme with advanced standing in line with the University’s standard RPL requirements. Such cases are subject to prior approval by the University of Kent according to its RPL process.
All applicants are considered on an individual basis and additional qualifications, professional qualifications and relevant experience may also be taken into account when considering applications.
