How does Clearing work?

Clearing explained: your step-by-step path to securing a place.

Clearing explained

In the UK, Clearing is a process that helps students secure a university place if they don’t already have one. It opens after 30 June and you can use Clearing if you didn’t receive any offers, didn’t meet your offer conditions, or declined your existing university choices.

What courses can I apply for?

You’ll find our course vacancies on our website, and you can apply online. If you want to talk through your options, just contact our team at study@kent.ac.uk or telephone:
+44 (0)1227 768896 and we'll be happy to help you through the Clearing process.

When can I apply?

Clearing opens in July and closes in August. If we make you an offer we'll just need you to confirm your results with us as soon as you have them. Take a look at our timeline to stay up-to-date with all the key deadlines for 2026.

Who is Clearing for?

You can use Clearing if

  • you've had had a change of heart since you applied via UCAS and want to explore other options
  • you have received unexpected exam results and need to look for alternative courses
  • you haven’t applied through UCAS before
  • you applied through UCAS but didn’t receive any offers by 30 June.

Clearing for international students

International students can also use Clearing to apply to UK universities. Take a look at our dedicated Clearing for international students page for detailed information.
