MA Social Work Bursary

The fees for the qualifying MA in Social Work are £6,000 per annum for an EU/home student and £9,000 per annum for an international student.

Up until this year all students on qualifying social work programmes attracted an NHS (Department of Health) bursary. This is no longer the case; the Department of Health has just announced that there will be a cap nationally on the number of student bursaries available. Most programmes have fewer bursaries than students. Because the allocation model is based on existing student number new programmes – including Kent new Social Work MA – did not receive an allocation. More information can be found on the NHS website at www.nhsba.nhs.uk/swb.

In recognition of this the School of Social Policy, Sociology and Social Research has agreed to fund 5 bursaries for MA Social Work students starting in September 2013. Each bursary will be a flat rate of £5000 pa i.e. £5000 for each year of the two year MA. These will be allocated by an academic panel and those holding offers will be informed of the panel’s decision the week beginning 15th July. Eligibility will be based on the candidate’s performance at Stage 2 of the selection process.

SSPSSR MA Scholarships

SSPSSR will be awarding on a competitive basis up to four MA Scholarships worth £3,000 each for those who earn First Class Degrees with us this year. These awards can be combined with the Kent £1,000 loyalty discount and will make a significant difference to the cost of studying for an MA (the combined total representing the large majority of MA fees).

Applicants must have a First Class degree and the awards are intended ordinarily for students to study for the MA in Methods of Social Research and who are eligible for (residency rules apply) and dedicated to the idea of applying in January for a full ESRC PhD Scholarship (Home/EU fees + over £13k per annum for three years) that would cover PhD studies starting academic year 2014-2015. These PhD awards are competitive but we as a School have enjoyed considerable success in being awarded scholarships in recent years.

To apply you must submit the following to Kalli Glezakou (K.Glezakou@kent.ac.uk) by July 1st 2013:

- A 1,000 word proposal (excluding references) of research that you would like to develop into a PhD application.
- The names of two academic referees who have agreed to support your application, at least one of whom must have agreed to help you develop your PhD proposal.
- Your cv - which should detail the breakdown of your marks and your final degree classification.
- Any professional experience relevant to your proposed research.

The closing date is 1st July 2013,

Decisions will be made at the latest by July 20th. Applications will be judged on the basis of the quality of qualifications + cv / the references / the appropriateness of the nominated supervisors / the quality of the proposal.

We welcome applications to undertake research in health services and evaluation (no teaching commitments).

The Centre for Health Services Studies (CHSS) is a centre of excellence for health service research and research training. The Centre has a wide range of research and disciplinary experience and undertakes commissioned research as well as a portfolio of competitively funded studies. It is the lead institution for the NIHR Research Design Service South East (RDS). CHSS has excellent links with local healthcare organisations and also with the School of Pharmacy based on the University’s Medway Campus. CHSS is involved in a range of local and national research projects. With the appointment of a new Director, Professor Stephen Peckham, in July 2012, CHSS is seeking to develop its research portfolio with a stronger emphasis on health services research. Currently the CHSS is collaborating with local NHS organisations on the development of research evaluating services for people with long term conditions, developing new clinical trials, service evaluations and continues to be involved in large-scale multi-institutional research projects. CHSS is also part of the Department of Health funded Policy Research Unit in Commissioning and the Healthcare System (www.prucomm.ac.uk) which is directed by Professor Stephen Peckham and is a collaboration with the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and the University of Manchester. The successful student will be supervised by a supervisory team with at least a senior staff member in CHSS as lead supervisor and prospective students may wish to acquaint themselves with the current research areas of Professor Stephen Peckham, Professor Simon Coulton, Jenny Billings and Dr Kate Hamilton-West.

MA Civil Society, NGO and Non-profit Studies Scholarship

SSPSSR has created a bespoke Scholarship for appropriately qualified individuals from organisations with membership of the National Council for Voluntary Organisations (NCVO). The Scholarship, a generous £2,000 discount on tuition fees, is available on a competitive application basis.

We believe this scheme is needed because many British voluntary organisations lack the extensive budgets to enable their staff to benefit from higher level degree programmes, yet face enormous social, economic, political and policy pressures at the current moment. Staff and organisations require access to leading knowledge and analytic approaches relating to civil society in order to help them navigate and negotiate these challenges. Kent’s NCVO Scholarship is designed to address this need by making this access more affordable to such organisations.

The Civil Society, NGO and Non-profit Studies Master’s is unique in its combination of specialist civil society research and teaching expertise honed over two decades, attending to the third sector, philanthropy and social movements; and more general social science options, covering research methods and a range of social and policy topics. These are designed to equip students with a wide range of transferable competences, skills and capabilities relevant to careers not only in the third sector, but in government and business too.

We are delighted to be collaborating in this way with the NCVO to help strengthen the capacity of voluntary or third sector organisations in Britain.

2013 application process
Reward of the School of Social Policy, Sociology and Social Research’s NCVO Scholarship will be made on a competitive basis:

15 July 2013: Deadline for applications and supplementary evidence (transcripts, references, cv and NCVO membership validation)
25-26 July 2013: Interviews held
30 Sept 2013: Term starts

If you work for an NCVO member organisation and are interested in applying for the NCVO Scholarship please contact the SSPSSR Postgraduate office to register your interest:
