The Italians on the Land

Changing perspectives on Republican Italy then and now

University of Kent
11th & 12th October 2008

The study of Italy under the Roman Republic is currently enjoying something of a resurgence in popularity. New techniques and ideas are being brought to bear on old questions with interesting results. This conference aims to look at Italy from an Italian as well as from a Roman perspective.

However, its remit is intended to be quite broad, looking at a broad range of areas covering:

Demography.
Agricultural and economic history.
Population movements & urbanisation
Settlement pattern trends.
Legal History.
Reform under the Republic.

Among other issues it is hoped to cover the Gracchan Crisis and the events that led to it with a special emphasis on the economic and social factors involved. The conference will not only be concerned with history but also with archaeology. In the archaeological sphere it is well known that there have been improvements in methodology and dating which are leading to interesting results. In essence we hope that this conference will provide a forum for the discussion of the new ideas and interpretations which are currently to be found within ancient history and archaeology. The impact of new archaeological interpretations coupled with this greater accuracy in dating means that this historical period is currently the subject of much new research. This will be the First UK conference to cover the broad range of subjects that make up Italian studies at the present day and as such will offer the chance to bring together and present a view of the diverse methods of approach which are currently to be found in this area.

Our especial hope in putting together this conference was that we would provide an opportunity for younger scholars to present their work for debate and scrutiny while, at the same time, providing a like opportunity for some mature scholars.  We have an interesting and broad spectrum of papers which reflects not only the fulfilment of this hope but also the variety of approaches being taken to this area of study today.
