Staff parking

All permits are valid from 1 October to 30 September (henceforward referred to as a "transport year"). The Parking Office in the Estates Department administers and issues the permits. Parking is enforced by Campus Watch. Parking is limited and permit holders cannot be guaranteed a parking space.

Before applying please ensure you have read the Regulations for the Management of Traffic at the University of Kent for Staff, Students and Other Persons (henceforward referred to as the "UoK Traffic Regulations") and are aware of the list of infringements. For further information and to apply please click on the appropriate tab below.

A pink permit is for permanent members of staff and allows the holder to park in any car park on campus except visitor Pay & Display car parks.

Payment

There is a charge for the permit which is based on your gross salary according to the table below.

Deductions will be made in installments of one twelfth of the relevant scale charge in each of the months from October to September during which the permit is held, and in each month concerned the scale charge will be determined by reference to the total gross pay in the month multiplied by twelve. If your permit commences or ends part way through a month, the deduction to be made for that month will be apportioned on a daily basis.

Occasional User Permit (OUP) - for staff who only need to use a car park a few times within the transport year. (Ideal for those who usually commute by public transport or car share).

This is a new system, which the Estates Department is trialling this year. It has been designed to meet the requirements of:

  • Staff who only need to park at the University on an occasional basis. It is therefore ideal for those who commute by public transport, bike, car share or on foot.
  • Staff who require a permit for up to ten consecutive working days and who do not hold an annual parking permit.
How the system works

An Occasional User Permit is a scratch card valid for one day only. Staff will be able to park on the day of their choice. The total number of scratch cards that can be purchased in each transport year varies according to the type of user. Please see the table below for further information.

Type of user Number of scratch cards permitted
Staff contracted for an academic year who do not hold an annual parking permit 60 per transport year
Staff contracted on a temporary basis who do not hold an annual parking permit Approximately 25% of contracted days *
Staff who hold a staff car share permit 10 per transport year
Staff who require a permit for up to 10 consecutive working days and do not hold an annual parking permit 10 per academic term

* See Appendix A for guide

Scratch cards are valid for staff and students who do not have an annual blue or pink permit and are issued in accordance with the UoK Traffic Regulations and subject to the acceptance of the OUP Terms and Conditions and guidelines.

Payment

Scratch cards are normally sold in batches of 5, charged at £2.50. They can be purchased from the Parking Office in the Estates Department using cash only. It will not be possible to cancel the scratch card once it has been purchased. It is the responsibility of the scratch card holder to contact the Parking Office if a scratch card is no longer required.

Getting started

A simple two stage process must be followed in order to obtain scratch cards.

  1. Registration and booking

Staff will need to register and book to use the OUP system. This is done by completing the Occasional Use Permit form and emailing it to parking@kent.ac.uk or posting it to the Parking Office in the Estates Department. Your application will then be reviewed by the Estates Department and a confirmation email will be sent to you if successful.

Students will need to complete the application form for Exceptional Circumstances. Further information will be given once a decision has been made by the Parking Panel.

  2. Purchasing

Once your application has been approved, you can purchase the OUP scratch cards (up to your maximum allocation) from the Parking Office in the Estates Department.

If you have any suggestions for improving the scheme, please send them to parking@kent.ac.uk or the Parking Office in the Estates Department.

Car share permit - for staff travelling together who wish to use any car park throughout the transport year

This permit allows a team of car sharers to share the cost of a permit. Please see the car share guidelines for further information.

Payment

There is a charge of £15 per person per transport year for a green permit. Full payment will be required on collection of the permit. Payment can be made by cash or cheque made payable to 'UNIKENT'.

How to apply

All members of the car share team will need to complete a paper application form together. Please ensure that the first person entered is the main contact for the team. You will then need to send this form to the Parking Office.

Please read this further information if you are Blue Badge holder or a driver with a medical condition.
