Grounds Maintenance Unit

The Grounds Maintenance Unit is located in the Estates Centre at the end of Park Wood Road. The team has a responsibility to ensure that the University grounds are maintained to an agreed standard, based upon a detailed specification.

The University grounds include

  • Sports facilities
  • Formal gardens
  • Woodland
  • Grassed areas
  • Hay meadows
  • Shrub beds
  • Ponds and the woodland trail

Winter weather

The Unit is also responsible for clearing snow and ice from the University roads and footpaths. If there is a heavy overnight frost, the clearance of ice follows an agreed priority order (with the exception of week-ends when there is no clearance).

Woodland areas

The woodland areas are of great importance to the University and they are managed by the Unit in accordance with Forestry Commission guidelines and recommendations. This sometimes means that certain trees have to be felled because of disease or instability or because they are part of an agreed coppicing plan. Whenever possible information will be given on the web relating to this area of the Grounds Maintenance Unit's work.
