The University of Kent offers specially designed programmes to prepare international students, who do not have English as a first language, for academic study. These courses focus on developing your English language and study skills so that you can meet the level of proficiency required for your chosen course of study. If you complete one of our Pre-sessional Courses, and achieve a final grade which meets your condition of entry, you will not need to take another IELTS or TOEFL examination.

During the course the following key transferable skills will be developed:

  • Academic writing, in particular essay writing
  • Skills for academic reading

  • Listening to lectures and listening in the general academic environment

  • Using information and note-taking

  • Speaking in seminars and giving presentations

  • Critical thinking and UK Academic Culture

  • IT and using word-processing and presentation software

 Pre-sessional

Assessment

You are assessed by means of:

  • Coursework
    • in the form of both written work and an oral presentation
  • The Kent International Test of English (KITE)
    • an end-of course proficiency test taken in September

Each course has a minimum language entry requirement in order to ensure that all students have a good chance of reaching the level of proficiency required in the time available.
