About Kent

Community relations

The University of Kent is committed to maintaining and developing the good relations we have with our local communities.

As one of three universities in both Canterbury and Medway, we make a significant economic, social and cultural contribution to the region. We are one of the largest employers, with over 2,500 staff and we are pleased that over 40% of our students come from the region.

Kent students' contribution to the region

With regard to students who come to us from further afield, an important factor is that we are able to offer a safe environment and the opportunity to live as part of a thriving community. In turn, our students make a significant contribution to the region not just in terms of economic spend, but by being flexible and skilled members of the workforce. In addition, Kent students make a significant impact as volunteers, working across a range of areas for example in schools, with the elderly, and in conservation. Figures from Kent's student union show that more than 1800 students put in over 46,000 volunteering hours a year.

Neighbourliness and pride

We are mindful of the impact on the local area of a large student population, whether they are students from Kent or one of the other universities. Together with Kent Union, the University works to instill in our students a sense of neighbourliness and pride in where they live, work and study. From their earliest days with the University, including the Vice-Chancellor's welcome message, we remind them of the need to have respect for both the local community and the University community of students and staff.

Effective procedures

We have well-established and effective procedures in place to handle disciplinary issues should they arise, and on the rare occasion that we need to liaise with external bodies over student conduct, it is our policy to do so in full compliance.

Feedback

We welcome all feedback and comments from members of the local community and will respond promptly to all enquiries. Please email: contactus@kent.ac.uk
