About

Dr Robin Rose Breetveld is a lecturer in Sociology & Social Work on the Canterbury and Medway campuses at the University of Kent. Dr Breetveld has extensive research experience focussing on marginalised groups, and their PhD Bisexual (un)belonging: Exploring the socio-spatial negotiation of plurisexual individuals in LGBT+ and queer spaces (2023) explores concepts of belonging, identity, and spatial negotiation through an artistic and ethnographic lens. 

Dr Breetveld completed their PhD and MA in Sociology at the University of Kent, and their BA in Social Work & Social Services (with a specialisation in Mental Health) at The Hague University of Applied Sciences (De Haagse Hogeschool) in the Netherlands. Dr Breetveld has been teaching within Higher Education since early 2013, in the Netherlands and England, and has been a full-time lecturer at Kent since 2021. They are an Associate Fellow of Higher Education (Advance HE). 

Within the university, Dr Breetveld is also a member of the Gender, Sexuality and Culture research cluster, the Centre for Global Science and Epistemic Justice, the Visual Sensory Cluster, iCCi Research Group, and the Centre for Ethnographic Research. Furthermore, they are members of the Staff Disability Network and the Staff LGBT+ Network.

Research interests

Dr Breetveld’s interest lies in researching the lived experience of plurisexual individuals, sexual identity, socio-spatial belonging, inner-community marginalization and discrimination, and epistemic justice. Furthermore, their research focus lies in advancing intersectional feminist methodologies alongside sexuality scholarship, developing creative and artistic output to make research dissemination more accessible for broader audiences.  

Likewise, Dr Breetveld has avid experience working as a Research Assistant on intra-University projects, such as the LGBT+ Experiences Working in Higher Education project (2021-2022), which was a joint research project between the UCU, the University of Essex, the University of Sussex, and the University of Kent.

Dr Breetveld’s current and forthcoming publications focus on:

- Queer theory and LGBTQAI+ scholarship.

- Intersectional Feminism and Epistemic Justice.

- Sexual Geographies and Sociology.

- Embodiment and Affect.

- Sexuality and Neurodiversity.

- Creative Research Methods (With a focus on visual methods such as graphic storytelling).

Teaching

Dr Breetveld teaches with great variety within the School of Social Sciences, convening modules, lectures, and teaches seminars for a wide range of subjects. These include, but are not limited to: Sociology, Social Work, Social Sciences, Criminology, Criminal Justice, Cultural Studies, Research Methods, and Health & Social Care.

Supervision

Dr Breetveld is interested in supervising UG, PG and PGR candidates on the topics of sexuality, gender, space, community, affect, embodiment, and creative methods.
