About

Dr Edward Mundy is a Lecturer in Psychology with a Clinical Focus and a qualified Clinical Psychologist. Edward teaches across the School of Psychology's clinical teaching, with an emphasis on the Clinical Associate Psychologist (CAP) Apprenticeship MSc. In addition to his work at the University of Kent, Edward works clinically in NHS adult mental health services as a Senior Clinical Psychologist.

Edward has worked predominantly within specialist mental health services in the NHS for adults experiencing complex mental health problems, including Community Mental Health Teams, Early Intervention for Psychosis, and acute services (inpatient and Crisis Resolution Home Treatment Teams). In addition to general adult and older adult mental health, Edward has expertise in working with people who have distressing psychotic experiences, having completed a Post-Graduate Certificate in Advanced Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for Psychosis and Bipolar Affective Disorder at the Oxford Cognitive Therapy Centre, University of Oxford.

Having worked predominantly with people experiencing complex mental health difficulties, Edward is driven by a strong belief in the importance of plurality of approaches when it comes to alleviating psychological distress and values the use of a range of evidence-based psychological models, theories, and therapies including cognitive-behavioural, mentalisation, attachment, and psychodynamic.

Research interests

Edward's research interests span adult adult mental health, with an emphasis on improving and developing mental health services, particularly for people with psychosis, across acute services, and improving our understanding of suicide and how to support people in acute psychological distress.

Prior to starting his clinical training, Edward worked on an NIHR funded project developing a model of best practice for crisis teams, which was published in the British Journal of Psychiatry.

More recently, he is involved in supervising doctoral research exploring the psychological needs of older adults admitted to psychiatric inpatient units. Edward also has an interest in the health needs of gay, bisexual, and men who have sex with men, in particular sexualised use of drugs, commonly known as ‘Chemsex.’ Edward is a co-author on an upcoming British Psychological Society publication on how Practitioner Psychologist can be employed to work with this population.
