In memory of former Deputy Vice-Chancellor Maurice Vile

Katherine Moss

Maurice Vile, founding member of staff at the University of Kent, sadly passed away peacefully at home on 6 May after a six-month illness.

Maurice’s contributions to the University were truly foundational. Joining us at our very beginning in 1965, he played a vital role in shaping the academic and intellectual spirit that Kent has come to be known for. His promotion to Professor in 1968 and his subsequent service as Pro Vice-Chancellor and then Deputy Vice-Chancellor reflected not only his scholarly eminence but also the high esteem in which he was held by colleagues and students alike.

Even in his retirement, Maurice remained a cherished member of our community as an Emeritus Professor, continuing to inspire generations with his wisdom and integrity. He leaves behind a remarkable legacy, not just as a leading academic in his field, but as a kind, generous, and principled individual.

The funeral service will take place at Barham Crematorium on Saturday 14 June at 12:00, followed by a celebration of his life. Maurice’s family have set up a tribute page with more details about the funeral for any who would like to attend or leave a message.
