Qualifications: BA, BA (Munich), MA, PhD (Lond), PGCHE (Kent)
Philipp Kender is a Lecturer in Law. He completed his doctorate in 2022. In his dissertation, Philipp examined the resurgence of political authoritarianism in early twenty-first century Europe from the perspectives of social theory and legal history. Prior to joining the University of Kent, he taught on a variety of modules across the core LLB and LLM curricula in the Law School at Birkbeck College, University of London.
Philipp’s current research explores the social, political, and legal dimensions of authoritarianism today, with a particular focus on authoritarian currents in Europe. He is moreover pursuing research aimed at formulating a concept of authority as a historical social practice. His work is informed by the historical analyses of power-knowledge apparatuses proposed by Michel Foucault and the critical theory of modern society formulated by the first generation of intellectuals associated with the Frankfurt School. He has a scholarly interest in the biographies of these diverse and divergent thinkers.
