- Per Laleng
Per Laleng is a graduate of the University ofKent, where he obtained a degree in English & French Law. He has an MPhil in Social and Political Theory from the University of Cambridge, and was called to the Bar of England & Wales in 1994.
Before returning to Kent, he practised as a barrister specialising in personal injury litigation, particularly industrial disease claims and clinical negligence. His teaching draws on that experience to make complex legal reasoning accessible and relevant.
Per was Director of Mooting at Kent Law School for over a decade. He led the launch of the integrated MLaw in Solicitors’ Practice in 2022. He is a qualified civil and commercial mediator.
Per is a Senior Lecturer who teaches and writes in the law of tort and civil dispute resolution.
· How courts decide questions of causation and responsibility in tort law
· How law deals with uncertainty, risk and statistical evidence
· How judges understand and use scientific and medical evidence in complex cases
· Using data and quantitative methods to study how legal decisions are made
· What influences judicial reasoning, especially in appeal courts
· How artificial intelligence might change the way lawyers and judges reason about legal problems.

Per spent eight years practising as a barrister specialising in personal injury law. As such, Per is happy to supervise candidates who wish to research in practice-related areas of (civil) law. He will consider supervision within areas related to his research interests as set out above.
Per is a qualified civil and commercial mediator and a member of Gray’s Inn.
