Jiaolin Chen

Accounting and Finance BSc (Hons)

I think Kent is a fantastic university.

What attracted you to studying at Kent??

For me, the most significant aspect of studying at Kent is the University’s environment. I attended an Open Day before applying to Kent, and I really liked the tranquil setting of the campus. I also like the city of Canterbury as it is a well-known historic site with a magnificent cathedral.

How would you describe your lecturers?

All the lecturers on my course are very friendly and helpful. When they are teaching, they go into great detail on the key points and also tell us what we should read after each lecture and provide advice for future improvements.

Which modules have you enjoyed the most and why?

I really enjoyed a module on the principles of finance because I have a strong interest in finance. I learnt about various markets, as well as the investment and financing decision-making process, the time value of money and the financial system, gaining really valuable knowledge.

How would you describe your fellow students?

Everyone here is lovely; they are so helpful and welcoming. Whenever I have something I don’t know or understand, my friends always help me and provide me with guidance. Also, whenever we have group presentations, everyone collaborates very well with one another – both face-to-face and online and we are constantly assisting one another.

What are the facilities like on campus?

There are numerous study areas on campus, such as the study hub, which is open 24 hours a day and offers free computer access across the School. The University has a spacious library that provides all the core reading materials we need for our modules. There’s also a sports centre, where you can reserve a space or court for various sports, as well as a gym where you can exercise.

What about the social life?

I play badminton and go to the gym every week, but I also go to yoga sessions every now and then at the gym, which I think is a fantastic opportunity. The campus has social spaces such as cafés and restaurants, where I eat and hang out with my friends.

Have you used the University’s Careers and Employability Service?

Yes. When I applied for a summer internship, I booked an appointment to get advice on my CV and I managed to upload my CV with the help of the team during my appointment. The adviser told me what I needed to improve and include in my CV and provided very helpful feedback. That’s why I think the University’s Careers and Employability Service is excellent.

What have you most enjoyed during your time at Kent?

My favourite thing is trying out new things. I’ve learned new skills and found new hobbies such as yoga, table tennis and tennis.

What career do you hope to follow?

My goal is to work at an accounting and finance firm, focusing on financial services. I want to apply the knowledge I have obtained from my degree along with my great passion for finance.

Any advice to somebody thinking of coming to Kent?

I think Kent is a fantastic university; the University provides us with a lot of useful services, such as the Careers and Employability Service and student wellbeing support, which are very beneficial for students. It’s also worth noting that there are a variety of societies, which can help you to find out about different cultures; they're also a great way to make new friends!
