How important was India to Britain and its global imperial interests? Was it really the ‘jewel in the crown’? By examining the historically significant relationship between imperial Britain and arguably its most prized colonial possession, you will develop an understanding of a complex relationship that influenced the development of both empire and colony, well into the present. The ways in which India influenced imperial policies (social, economic, military) in both metropolitan Britain and in the wider British dominions and colonies, was indelible. The ways in which you will develop a critical historical awareness of the British Empire, against a broader global canvas will help you to see just how much India sits at the centre of global history.

2,000 words Essay . Assessment Details: A written piece of work that will develop research skills, critical analysis and linking through module themes and readings. worth 70%.

On successfully completing the module, students will be able to:
1) Appraise the historical relationship between the United Kingdom and India from, c. 1757-1947
2) Investigate how imperialism has shaped global Britain and critically analyse how this has been treated in the historiography
3) Apply historical knowledge to contemporary themes, viz., migration, globalisation, and race
4) Individually and/or collectively debate, differentiate and explain contentious themes within the field of colonial history
5) Effectively communicate information, ideas, and interpretations concerning scholarly debates using written and visual primary evidence.
