Overview

What’s the importance of organic synthesis? Why should we learn about different organic processes? Organic synthesis is key to the success of multiple industries such as medicine and pharmaceuticals. In this module, we will learn about advanced complex methods for different organic transformations bringing together the beauty and complexity of organic chemistry. This module will broaden and extend your knowledge of organic chemistry to standards used in modern chemistry research, academia, pharmaceutical science, and other related industries. You will study the principles to master various bond formations and functional group transformations at an advanced level, being essential skills for anyone planning to pursue future careers involving organic chemistry.

Method of assessment

2 hours Test. Assessment Details: VLE Test worth 20%.
1,500 words Short Writing Piece. Assessment Details: Problem Sheet worth 20%.
2 hours Exam. Assessment Details: Exam worth 60%.

Learning outcomes

On successfully completing the module, students will be able to: 

1. Design organic synthesis routes and apply these to unseen synthetic problems.

2. Critically discuss a range of advanced contemporary synthetic organic chemistry methods.

3. Deploy critical structural analysis skills for the characterisation of organic molecules along with the use of technology to effectively draw these.

4. Critically discuss the central role of organic chemistry in our society and explain its importance in solving key issues in energy, health, and medicine.
