Overview

Have you got a burning question in Biosciences you would like to answer? Do you want to hone your lab skills for a career in academia or industry? Do you see yourself as a bio-based entrepreneur, or is your passion communicating biosciences to different audiences? In this module, you will work directly towards these ambitions by gaining experience in an area of your choosing. There are several different project types you can choose from. You can select a lab-based or data-driven project in which you will answer scientific questions that interest you, potentially contributing to new discoveries and working at the frontiers of our current knowledge and understanding. Or you can choose a Business project where you will develop your ideas into a business plan, or a Communications project where you will develop educational tools for either the general public, specific professional audiences, or school children. Whatever future career you have in mind, this module will provide you with essential skills to help you achieve your goals.

Planning and Engagement (4,000 words) worth 10%
Presentation (10 minutes) worth 15%

Learning outcomes

On successfully completing the module, students will be able to: 

1. Critically evaluate an advanced research topic through study of peer-reviewed primary scientific literature.

2. Explain complex scientific phenomena and adapt it to suit the target audience.

3. Design approaches to address specific research questions, and to evaluate the limitations and the practicability of the experimental processes.

4. Appraise and integrate data from multiple sources to address a specific hypothesis.

5. Communicate research outcomes in verbal and written forms.

Notes

  1. Credit level 6. Higher level module usually taken in Stage 3 of an undergraduate degree.
  2. ECTS credits are recognised throughout the EU and allow you to transfer credit easily from one university to another.
