Christos Efstratiou
Dr Christos Efstratiou is a Reader in Ubiquitous Computing and Deputy Head of School of Computing at the University of Kent. His primary research focus is in the field of Ubiquitous Computing, with a particular emphasis on addressing the challenges of developing multi-sensory computational systems for understanding real-world human behaviour. His work involves designing techniques for detecting and modelling human activities through wearable and mobile sensing, IoT (Internet of Things) technologies, and passively collected human activity datasets. As part of this research, he explores the development and deployment of machine learning systems to effectively model real-world activities based on data captured by sensing technologies.
Prior to joining Kent in 2013, Dr Efstratiou was a Senior Research Associate at the University of Cambridge, a Research Associate at Lancaster University, and a Visiting Researcher at Sony Electronics Distributed Systems Lab.
Dr. Efstratiou is the Deputy Head of School of Computing. Prior to that he held the roles of Divisional Director of Postgraduate Studies (Taught) for the Division of Computing, Engineering, and Mathematical Sciences, and Director of Postgraduate Studies for the School of Computing.
Christos belongs to the following research groups:
Christos is interested in a range of topics including:
Teaching
Christos currently lectures on the following modules:
I would welcome people to contact me if they are interested in a PhD within the broad area of Ubiquitous Computing and applied Machine Learning. I prefer to hear from people who already have some idea of what research question(s)/topic they would like to investigate. Areas of particular interest include: sensing and data analytics in healthcare, acoustic sensing, activity recognition, privacy in ambient sensing technologies, applications of machine learning in mental health and wellbeing, applications of AI and Machine Learning in Architecture.
Christos is a member of the Steering Committee of the ACM Pervasive and Ubiquitous Computing Conference Series (UBICOMP). He was the program co-chair for the ACM UbiComp/ISWC 2021 conference, and member of the organising committees for UbiComp 2019, UbiComp 2018, MobiSys 2017, MobiSys 2016. Christos is the co-founder of the WristSense International Workshop Series, and co-organiser of the annual MobiUK Symposium.
