Women in Conservation: Keeping Safe in The Field.

The founder of Fieldwork Initiative, joins us for a workshop for PG students and PG supervisors.

Jerika Loren Heinze, the founder of Fieldwork Initiative, joins us for a workshop for PG students and PG supervisors on Wednesday 16th March from 3-5pm.

Two years ago, the Women in Conservation Canterbury Network (WCCN) organised the Truth be Told workshop in which postgraduates in SAC anonymously shared testimonies of unsafety in the field, mostly ones that had to do with (sexual) harassment, but also issues relating to LGBTQI+ and mental health issues.

They realised the need to address such issues and provide tools and support for students and enhance awareness among staff. Last year, the WCCN organised the online panel Safety in the Field in which four women shared their experience & expertise on grassroot as well institutional organisation to better the situation of safety during fieldwork. One of those speakers was Jerika Loren Heinze, the founder of Fieldwork Initiative.

“We as WCCN are very glad and grateful that together with SAC, this workshop is now being organised, and see this as a great and important step in the right direction.”

After last year’s panel there was an online ‘safety box’ compiled with articles and links to websites that can help you to prepare yourself for fieldwork.

If you are interested in joining WCCN please have a look at our Facebook, and on Wildhub, and come join us at one of our monthly meetings or activities.

Wednesday 16th March from 3-5pm.

This will be a virtual event, please join here.
