Mr Tony Osgood

Lecturer

Tizard

I joined the Tizard full time in August 2006 prior to which I worked in the NHS as a Specialist Psychologist in Learning Disability & Challenging Behaviour and as a Behaviour Specialist within a peripatetic NHS challenging needs service for a period of 7 years. My interests include mindfulness, person centred planning, positive behaviour support, communities of practice, autism and organisational influences on human service outcomes. I am just beginning a long overdue PhD, conducting an ethnography on communities of practice within learning disability provision and related systems.

Teaching

Apart from teaching on Under & Post-Graduate Tizard programmes, I have taught short and longitudinal programmes for a variety of organisations (private, local authority, health) on learning disability, autism, active support, rapport and positive behaviour support. I am a full-time Lecturer at the Tizard Centre. I have written on a variety of topics in a number of articles and book chapters. I teach primarily on the Certificate in Person Centred Support, Diploma in Positive Behaviour Support, Graduate Diploma in Applied Behaviour Analysis and post-graduate courses. I also teach Social Psychology module SP601: Understanding People With Learning Disabilities.

I am responsible for student recruitment and give a taster session each year, giving potential students the opportunity to experience what we have to offer at Tizard.

Osgood, Tony (2012) Commentary on ‘‘In celebration: living a lifethrough Positive Behaviour Support’’. Tizard Learning Disability Review, 17 (2). pp. 76-79. ISSN 1359-5474.

    Abstract

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to provide a commentary on Shephard’s narrative account of one person’s experience of Positive Behaviour Support (PBS). Design/methodology/approach – This paper reflects on Shephard’s account in the context of the burgeoning literature concerning the effectiveness of PBS and the author’s own experiences. Findings – Practitioners of PBS should consider narrative accounts as legitimate data. Originality/value – This commentary welcomes the move toward the inclusion of narrative, or ethnographic, perspectives when evaluating PBS. Keywords Positive Behaviour Support, Person centred, Narratives, Human stories, Ethnography Paper type Viewpoint

Osgood, Tony (2004) “Suit you, sir?” : Challenging Behaviour in Learning Disability Services. Paradigm-UK website. (unpublished)

    Abstract

This accessible article considers why supporting those individuals whose behaviour challenges services and systems is often so hard to achieve; it outlines the fundamentals of positive behaviour support, and responsive systems.

    Abstract

The recent White Paper Valuing People recommends adoption of person centred planning in developmental disability services. This paper suggests there is a difficulty in larger organisations applying such principles and leading implementation: the family of approaches now known as person-centred planning are about people, not organisations. Developmental disability service organisations often function by viewing service users as a population- some homogenous whole- collections of people with defining deficits requiring professional intervention. Whereas person centred planning is focused upon people, gifts and community. The paper suggests existing services have failed to learn the lessons of past "innovations": without a clear understanding of why previous value and practice initiatives have failed to be effectively implemented or maintained, services are likely to poorly apply, support and maintain the paradigm-challenging themes underpinning person centred planning. It is suggested organisations may soon be found to adopt the language, but not the practice, of person centred planning.

    Abstract

This chapter provides an overview of recent research on challenging behaviour within an IDD population, and considers best practice options for qualified learning disability nurses in understanding and responding to what might be termed 'exotic communication'.

Osgood, Tony (2005) Managing the Tensions between the Interests of Organisations and Service Users. In: UNSPECIFIED Person Centred Planning and Care Management with People with Learning Disabilities. Jessica Kingsley Publishers, London, pp. 51-66. ISBN 978-1-84310-131-4.

    Abstract

The context to arguments over the organisational implementation of person centred planning and action is the lives of people using services and there are examples in this chapter illustrating why person centred planning and action are vital to underpin changes in power and power relationships between services and service users.
