Research Associate
Tizard
Jennifer Leigh’s doctoral research was a phenomenological study on children’s perceptions, expressions and reflections of embodiment. She is an accredited Somatic Movement Therapist, a Qualified School Teacher and an experienced Yoga Instructor. She currently works as project manager on a study looking at Costs and Outcomes of Skilled Support for Individuals with Complex Needs. This has been funded by the National Institute for Health Research School of Social Care Research and aims to show whether quality of life outcomes are related to the level of skilled support an individual receives, or the costs of providing support. She is also research associate on the evaluation of ‘Imagining Autism’, an AHRC funded drama intervention for primary school children with autism. The Tizard Centre team, working with Dr David Wilkinson, in the School of Psychology, is evaluating the intervention which is building on a pilot study that demonstrated improvements in children’s imaginative and social play.
She previously worked as project manager on the National Evaluation of Gifted and Talented Physical Education which was funded by the Youth Sports Trust. She was part of an expert group seeking to develop participant development models for the Professional Golfers’ Association and has been a named reviewer on a report looking at a new model of Physical Activity and Sport Participation for Children and Young People. She is currently working on a pilot study exploring the importance of touch in parenting children with autism and tactile defensiveness and mapping parents’ perceptions to a possible intervention. Research interests include embodiment, embodied reflective practice and how it relates to professional practice, children’s expressions of their sense of embodiment, and children’s reflective practice along with aspects of physical activity, learning disability, autism and sport.
Teaching Jennifer has taught on both undergraduate and post-graduate courses at the Tizard Centre.
