Welcome to the School of Social Policy, Sociology and Social Research

The School of Social Policy, Sociology and Social Research is one of the largest departments of its type in the UK. It is made up of three main groups of teaching staff:

and two main research units:

The School offers programmes on the Canterbury campus and at the Medway campus at Chatham.

The School has a strong research culture. The School of Social Policy, Sociology and Social Research is a multidisciplinary school of social science and we retained our leading position within our disciplinary areas in the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise. Our submission was the largest in the Social Work, Social Policy and Social Administration unit of assessment and it was rated equal fourth in the proportion of research rated 4* (the highest level) and 95% of our submission was judged ‘internationally significant'.

The School’s research quality impacts on its teaching in two ways: teaching is by academics who are leaders in their fields and the School has more resources to put on its wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes.

SSPSSR has a number of interesting MA and PhD programmes see Postgraduate Programmes pages for more detail.
