Student Support - Your PASS-port to Success

In line with University policy, the School of Politics and International Relations Personal Academic Support System (PASS) aims to provide the following:

  • General academic guidance
  • Assistance with academic problems or difficulties
  • Individual progress monitoring
  • Information about progression routes
  • Support and guidance
  • Personal development

In addition to reading the information on these web-pages, a useful quick reference guide on who to speak to if you have a specific query can be found here.

Our Tutorial System

We consider your freedom to specialise in your area of interest, to read widely and independently, and to exchange ideas independently with a large number of staff and fellow students, to be an important part of the educational experience we are providing. Of course, we are happy to assist and support you, not only through lectures and seminars, but also through a multi-layered tutorial system.

The Student Support Officer

The School has a dedicated Student Support Officer, who is the linchpin of the entire system of student tutoring and progress monitoring.   The student support officer should be your first point of contact for the majority of queries.

Seminar leaders and module convenors

In the modules you are taking, you will have lectures, but also weekly one-hour tutorials/seminars.   Both module convenors and Seminar leaders have regular office hours for further consultation.

Year Tutors @ Undergraduate Level

If you should have any general academic queries in relation to your programme of study, or if you require guidance, for instance on module choices or graduate studies, there are Programme Specific Academic Year tutors who can help you.   To find out who your Year Tutor is please click here. Alternatively please contact Mrs Sara Witchell.

Programme Directors/Supervisors @ Postgraduate Level

Each MA student has a Supervisor who is there to help with any academic queries you may have.  Your supervisor is the Director of your Programme of Study, and is assigned at the start of the Autumn term – you can find out who your supervisor is by checking the Student Data System.  You can contact your supervisor directly, or via the Student Support Officer if you prefer.
