Profile

Prof Vile joined the School at its foundation in 1965, was promoted to a professorship in 1968 and has been an Emeritus Professor since 1985. He was Pro Vice-Chancellor of the University from 1975-81 and then Deputy Vice-Chancellor from 1981 to 1984. He also taught at the University of Exeter, 1954-62, and was Research Fellow of Nuffield College, Oxford, 1962-65. From 1989 to 1994 he was Director of British Programmes, Boston University and then Director of Research at Canterbury Christ Church University College from 1994 to 1999. He has also been a Visiting Professor at a number of American Universities.
