The degrees we offer

Biochemistry BSc Hons

petri dishBiochemistry deals with the way living organisms function at the molecular level. How do living organisms work? How are they built, controlled, repaired, supplied with energy, etc.? Life is found in many forms ranging from comparatively simple viruses and bacteria to mammals like ourselves where the complicated integration of metabolism in different tissues is necessary.

Biochemistry is an ideal degree if you aspire to a research career in a life sciences area; also teaching, business, publishing, marketing, information technology, etc., using key transferable skills. A guaranteed paid summer studentship is available on this programme for all students who attain a good level of achievement in their second year.

Biomedical Science BSc Hons

cellsAre you interested in a career in the NHS, a pharmaceutical company or in medical research? Would you like to explore the biochemical processes that occur in the human body, and particularly human diseases like cancer and the response to infection? Are you intrigued to learn how medicines are discovered and how they work? If you answer yes to any of these questions our Biomedical Sciences degree programme is exactly what you are looking for!

In addition, this course is accredited by the Institute of Biomedical Sciences, the professional body for Biomedical Scientists. See the Biomedical Sciences subject leaflet for more information.

Biology BSc Hons

cellsBiology is the study of life in all its various and rich forms, from simple viruses to the most complex organisms like human beings. It investigates, describes and analyses the structures and functions of living organisms and their interactions with the environment. Biology influences our everyday life - important subjects like human cloning, stem-cell research, genetically-modified organisms, the human genome project, the influence of mankind on the environment, the potential risks of some foods, and many other topics are at the forefront of social changes.

More information on our courses can be requested in print form either from the University Admissions Office or the School of Biosciences.

Offer levels

BSc (Hons) degrees: BBB at A level (biology preferred for Biomedical Science, biology and chemistry preferred for Biochemistry), IB 33 points (15 at Higher), plus GCSE Maths at Grade C or above.
Foundation Year: Please contact Admissions Officer: Dr Richard Williamson
Entry to the second year of the degree programme This option may be available to suitably qualified candidates. Typically, you will need to have:
