About

Chris completed an MA in Medieval and Early Modern Studies at Kent in 2019, gaining a Distinction and the Dr Jayne Wackett Award for best dissertation. In 2020 he was awarded a CHASE AHRC doctoral studentship to return to the Centre of Medieval Early Modern Studies at Kent to pursue a PhD.  

Research interests

Chris is interested in the early medieval world which followed the fall of the western Roman Empire. His work focuses on the period 400-800, and covers agriculture and land tenure, the development of kingship and the rise of an elite class, and the spread of Christianity and role of the Church and monasticism. He is particularly interested in the similarities and differences in the experience of peoples in eastern and western Britain and northern and southern Gaul. 

Thesis title and description 

Land, ownership, and power in post-Roman Britain and Gaul (Working Title)

This thesis looks at forms and developments of land tenure, and their effects on society, through the documentary and archaeological record.
