Business and Management with a Year in Industry BSc (Hons)
The year in industry was a great way to gain hands-on experience.
There were many factors; this course emphasised employability skills and the placement year was a great way to gain hands-on experience applying business theories in practice. Another factor was that this degree is accredited by the Chartered Management Institute (CMI), which opens up options in the future. Also, on the Open Day, the staff and students were extremely friendly and inviting.
I have enjoyed many modules because there is a practical approach to learning with assignments focusing on real-time modern business problems so that we get to place ourselves in the shoes of managers. For example, the corporate strategy module included a poster project where we strategically analysed a failing organisation in a real business setting, applying concepts to provide solutions. This enhanced my project management skills. Also, the product design module was fun; we designed a new textiles range, pitching it to Elsatex, a Kent-based manufacturer. The group took on the roles of a real buying team, which helped build our communication skills.
Despite the difficult times, it's been quite useful having recorded lectures in 20-minute sessions allowing us to digest and synthesise the information. The digital library has been a massive help for assignments. There is a whole host of academic business databases and articles available for free.
I was a marketing officer for a non-profit organisation, and it was one of the best learning experiences personally and professionally. I was able to identify what I liked and didn’t like about the experience which will help guide my future career options post-university. It has also helped me in my final year as I’ve taken a more proactive approach to stretch myself further.
You have access to three locations: Medway, Maidstone, and Canterbury in terms of the nightlife which is great as you can interact with lots of different people. There are also a whole host of societies – something for everyone! I am vice-president of the Sikh Society and events officer of Medway Business Society, where I’ve made lots of friends.
Come with an open mind and participate in everything possible to gain the most for self-development, learning and life experiences. Also, try to take advantage of all the facilities and resources available where there is support for any concerns you may have.
