MSc Computer Science, 2022

Marzia, a Data Analyst at Etihad Airways, graduated from Kent in 2022 with an MSc in Computer Science. She began her career as a Data Scientist at Afiniti, developing predictive models that boosted sales, before transitioning to her current role, where she optimizes revenue management systems and data integration.

Tell us about your career path since graduation.

Since graduating from Kent with an MSc in Computer Science, I have worked in data analytics and business intelligence across multiple industries. I started as a Data Scientist at Afiniti, where I developed predictive models that optimized customer-agent interactions, leading to increased sales.

Currently, I work as a Data Analyst at Etihad Airways, developing segmentation frameworks, managing data integration, and optimizing revenue management systems. My career has been a blend of data-driven problem-solving, stakeholder management, and using technology to drive efficiency.

What does a typical work day look like for you?

My day starts with checking my emails, followed by picking up on any project that I was working on the day before. I work closely with different teams to develop strategies that maximize revenue, such as through the optimization of codeshare agreements and automate processes.

I also spend time creating dashboards, testing system upgrades, and presenting findings to decision-makers. Some days involve deep-diving into data models, while others focus on collaborating with business teams to translate insights into action.

Can you share a professional highlight from your career so far?=

One of my biggest achievements was at Afiniti, where I built predictive models that increased sales by 5% by optimizing customer-agent pairings. At Etihad Airways, I worked on the transition from a legacy system to a new one that would help prorate yields for partner airlines more effectively leading to revenue optimization. I have also received multiple global recognition awards for my contributions to demand forecasting at GlaxoSmithKline.

How did your time at Kent help you achieve your current career?

Kent provided me with a strong foundation in computer science and data analytics. My MSc thesis on AI-driven emoji generation helped me develop machine learning skills, which I now apply in my professional work. Additionally, being a Bestway Scholar gave me the confidence and network to pursue opportunities in tech.

My involvement as an Outreach Ambassador, and my participation in competitions like i-Teams also helped me improve my communication and problem-solving skills. I was also fortunate enough to be able to work with the founder of Marlowe Consulting for one day.

What advice would you give to our current/prospective students who are looking to get into the same line of work?

Never give up! The data analytics field is constantly evolving, so keep learning new skills, work on projects, and build a strong portfolio. Networking is key—connect with professionals, seek mentorship, and don’t be afraid to take on challenging opportunities. Problem-solving and adaptability are crucial in this field, so always be open to learning from your experiences.

Did you get involved in any extracurricular activities as a student?

Yes! I was a subeditor for GradPost, Kent’s postgraduate newsletter, and participated in i-Teams, an interdisciplinary business competition. I also worked as a photographer for Kent events and was an Outreach & Lead Ambassador for the university. In addition, I worked as an Admin Assistant at Kent Union's Jobshop.

Do you have a favourite memory from your time at Kent?

One of my favourite memories is participating in the Blooming Brushes painting program. It was a wonderful creative outlet and a great way to unwind while connecting with fellow students.

Is there anything you would do differently if you could repeat your time at Kent?

Not really! I feel like I made the most of my time there, from academics to extracurricular activities.

Are you still in touch with other Kent alumni or academics?

Yes, I am still in touch with some of my Kent peers as well as my thesis supervisor. The connections I built at Kent have been invaluable in both my professional and academic journey.

What are your future ambitions?

I want to pursue a PhD and eventually have my own business—though I am still deciding on the exact direction. My goal is to combine my expertise in data science and business to create something impactful.
