Tell us about your career path since graduation.

After earning my Master's degree in Human Resource Management and achieving CIPD certification, I began my HR career at Swale Heating, an SME based in Kent. Starting as an HR Administrator, I applied my academic training in a real-world setting, and quickly advanced to the role of HR Operations Manager. In this position, I led the department, balancing immediate operational needs with longer-term strategic initiatives.

Following my tenure at Swale Heating, I joined Julius Rutherford, a bespoke commercial cleaning company in London, as HR Director. There, I managed a generalist HR team and focused on strategic HR planning, employee relations, organizational development, and employee engagement, driving initiatives to support sustainable growth and enhance workforce satisfaction.

Currently, I am the People & Culture Director at Uber Boats by Thames Clippers, where I lead a six-person HR team and work closely with executive leadership to align HR strategies with the company’s business objectives. In this role, I provide strategic HR partnership to the C-suite, fostering a culture that supports both organizational success and employee well-being within the dynamic transportation sector.

What does a typical work day look like for you?

I start each day by reviewing key priorities, assessing the day’s meetings, and connecting with the HR team to align on objectives. Additionally, I collaborate closely with senior leadership, offering strategic guidance, advancing key projects, and ensuring cohesive policies across the department. Depending on the day, I address emails and respond to any urgent inquiries to maintain seamless communication and timely support.

Can you share a professional highlight from your career so far?

I developed a tailored leadership and employee engagement program that directly reduced turnover and improved engagement. Through targeted workshops and coaching, leaders gained practical skills to foster team motivation and collaboration, resulting in measurable gains in retention and a stronger, more engaged workforce.

How did your time at Kent help you achieve your current career?

The programme provided a comprehensive foundation in all facets of HR, equipping me with theoretical knowledge and practical expertise. Completing the Master’s degree alongside CIPD Level 7 certification was especially beneficial, as it demonstrated my commitment to the HR field and positioned me as a strategic thinker from the outset of my career.

What advice would you give to our current/prospective students who are looking to get into the same line of work?

Maintain a focus on strategic value in all discussions with potential employers. Embrace fixed-term roles and opportunities in unfamiliar industries; each experience offers valuable learning potential. Approach every role with a commitment to absorbing insights and expanding your expertise.

Did you get involved in any extracurricular activities as a student?

I didn't have the time as I was living off-campus but I had fellow students who did and really enjoyed all the different activities.

Do you have a favourite memory from your time at Kent?

Interestingly, some of my fondest memories are from time spent in the library. There’s something incredibly calming and fulfilling about finding a quiet corner and diving deep into a topic I’m truly passionate about. And, of course, my graduation at the magnificent Canterbury Cathedral stands out as a highlight!

Is there anything you would do differently if you could repeat your time at Kent?

There is nothing I would do differently. My time at Kent was successful and well worth the effort.

Are you still in touch with other Kent alumni or academics?

I stay connected with one of my former lecturers on LinkedIn, and enjoy following her work and updates.

What are your future ambitions?

To continue growing and advancing in my career as well as exposing myself to different industries. I am also passionate about supporting women in senior leadership roles.
