Since graduating from the University of Kent, I have developed a career in fundraising. My journey began at the Woodland Trust, the UK's leading woodland conservation charity, where I honed my skills in fundraising event management and prospect research. I became passionate about the world of fundraising and its importance to charities and universities. Drawn back to my alma mater in 2005, I joined the Philanthropy team and have since progressed to the role of Philanthropy Manager. I am particularly proud of my work supporting the Parkinson's Centre for Integrated Therapy and I am continually inspired by the positive impact our fundraising efforts have on the University and its community.
A typical day as a Philanthropy Manager at the University of Kent is very varied. My mornings might involve drafting compelling grant applications to secure funding for ground-breaking research projects. Afternoons could be spent meeting with potential donors, sharing the University's inspiring stories and building lasting relationships. I also dedicate time to recognising our generous supporters through thank you letters and impact reports, highlighting the results of their contributions. It’s a fulfilling role where every day presents new opportunities to make a meaningful difference to the lives of our students and the wider community.
A career highlight was undoubtedly the opening ceremony of the Wigoder Law Building. After several years of dedicated fundraising for the Kent Law Campaign, witnessing this magnificent building come to life was incredibly rewarding. The building was officially opened by Baroness Hale, the former President of the Supreme Court, which made the occasion even more special. It was an honour to share the moment with our generous donors and the Kent Law Campaign Student and Young Alumni Groups. This campaign significantly enhanced Kent Law School's facilities, providing students with exceptional employability opportunities through the Mooting Chamber and the Kent Law Clinic, whilst simultaneously offering vital legal support free of charge to those in need within the local community.
My time at the University of Kent was instrumental in shaping my career path. As Social Secretary of RAG (Raise and Give, the charitable society within Kent Union), I gained invaluable experience in event management, fundraising and teamwork. Coordinating and executing a variety of fundraising initiatives (including the annual winter ball, a bed push into town and charity quizzes) ignited my passion for helping others and ultimately led me to pursue a career in fundraising.
In order to get into fundraising I would advise students to join RAG or volunteer for a local charity to learn the key skills and gain the practical experience needed to become an effective fundraiser. Being able to build strong relationships and tell a compelling story is so important as is having a genuine passion for the causes you fundraise for.
I was involved in RAG which was an incredibly rewarding experience. It allowed me to develop a strong sense of community whilst making a difference to the lives of others. I was able to form friendships with students I wouldn't otherwise have had the opportunity to meet and I am still in touch with many of them now. The skills I gained in leadership, teamwork and event management were invaluable and have served me well in my career. RAG was a platform for personal growth and a lifelong commitment to giving back.
Graduating in Canterbury Cathedral was a truly unforgettable experience. I still remember the pride I felt at shaking hands with the Chancellor and collecting my graduation certificate surrounded by the rich history and stunning architecture of this remarkable venue. Sharing this occasion with family, friends and fellow graduates created a magical atmosphere, making it a day I will cherish forever. I now have the privilege of taking part in graduation ceremonies as a member of staff and the feeling of pride never leaves me.
Reflecting on my time at Kent, I wouldn't change a thing. The academic challenges, the vibrant campus life and the lifelong friendships I made have shaped me into the person I am today. It was a period of immense personal growth and discovery and I'm grateful for every experience, both big and small.
I am still in touch with many friends from University and we see each other as often as we possibly can despite being spread all over the world including Hong Kong and Canada. My husband and I met at Kent and we now have two young daughters. I also met my best friend at Kent (she was my next door neighbour in Keynes College) and we have been a major part of each other’s lives since - we were each other's chief bridesmaids, are Godmother to each other's daughters and even had our youngest daughters on the same day, in the same hospital in rooms opposite each other just two hours apart - what are the chances?!
I hope to continue supporting the University of Kent's philanthropic priorities through effective fundraising into the future. I am passionate about creating opportunities for our students to excel, both academically and personally. By securing vital funds, our team can enrich student experience at Kent, enable ground-breaking research to be carried out and strengthen Kent's positive impact on the community.
