The University of Kent is committed to making its website and associated subdomains accessible, in accordance with the Public Sector Bodies (Websites and Mobile Applications) (No. 2) Accessibility Regulations 2018.

Compliance Status

The Uni Kent Student App mobile application is partially compliant with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines version (WCAG) 2.1 AA standard, due to the non-compliances and exemptions listed below.

Non-accessible content

We formally test the accessibility of key user journeys that represent the breadth of content across this mobile application on a regular basis against WCAG 2.1 AA standards.

Some parts of the mobile application may not work for everyone. Below are known issues that we either need to fix, cannot fix, or do not need to fix right now.

Non-compliance with the accessibility regulations

The mobile application (iOS and Android versions) are currently undergoing continuing auditing and testing. The content of this section will be updated whenever new issues and workarounds are identified.

Non-text content (open functionality) 

Text equivalents of all audio/video are not currently supported or provided (WCAG 1.1.1).

Non-text content (closed functionality) 

Text equivalents of all audio/video are not currently supported or provided (WCAG 1.1.2). 

Captions (pre-recorded)

Captions are currently not supported; this will be added to our development roadmap (WCAG 1.2.2).

Audio description (pre-recorded) 

The mobile application supports text-to-speech feature on native articles only. Currently the mobile application displays articles from the mobile application, which control the description (WCAG 1.2.5).

Orientation 

Currently you are restricted to portrait view only on iOS. Orientation is adjustable on Android. We will add this feature to the iOS development roadmap (WCAG 1.3.4).

Resize text (closed functionality) 

This functionality is available on Android under the Community Content section. We will add to our development roadmap to add to iOS (WCAG 1.4.4).

Motion actuation

The only motion feature that is in the mobile application is the landscape/portrait switching when changing orientation of phone, as indicated in 1.3.4 (WCAG 2.5.4).

Name, Role, Value

Home tiles and Key Links tiles are images that cannot be accessed by screen readers (WCAG 4.1.2).

User preferences

  • Content technology - no ability currently for user to include captions with their video.
  • Preservation of accessibility information in transformations - once the above is in place, we will ensure that the captions are not lost when any transcoding happens.
  • Repair assistance
  • Accessibility and compatibility features - no documentation is available yet, but the user guide will include accessibility and compatibility features once complete.

Accessible documentation 

We will compile a user guide for the mobile application navigation and capabilities soon for distribution.

Disproportionate burden

This section covers issues that we cannot fix right now. We’ve assessed the cost of fixing these issues but believe that doing so would be a disproportionate burden within the meaning of the law.
