School of Mathematics, Statistics & Actuarial Science

Year 12 Maths & Computing Day

The Institute of Mathematics, Statistics and Actuarial Science and the Computing Laboratory are jointly hosting a day of lectures and activities aimed at providing exciting insights into these subjects for year 12 students. This will be held on our Canterbury campus on Wednesday 21st June. We hope you will find this day a good way of inspiring your students and informing them about studying at university and we will be pleased to see you at the event.

Master classes for KS3, year 9-10

Master classes are hands-on workshops intended for the pre-GCSE students and have proved popular with schools across Kent and in particular with Mathematics and ICT Specialist schools.

The aim is to provide an opportunity for students to explore application of mathematics in real life through simple experiments. The workshops are interesting, relevant and are designed to inspire students to continue studying mathematics at the AS and A2 levels.

We offer one or two master classes each term to consortia of schools in the same area. Master classes are run on the Canterbuy campus or in schools for up to fifty students in each session.

Year 12 Mathematics Taster Sessions

These are talks on areas of mathematics taught at the university and aim to introduce students to higher-level mathematics teaching and learing. In these sessions the relevance of sophisticated mathematical techniques to students' everyday experiences is explored.

The talks are designed to be accessible and interesting and provide an opportunity for groups of schools to visit the university campus in Canterbury.

Career Talks

The talks focus on the central role of mathematics in pathways to many careers and show that besides classical applications in the natural sciences, such as physics and chemistry, mathematical techniques are more and more entering life sciences, social sciences and the financial world, leading to a large variety of excellent employment opportunities for all those who leave universities with degrees in mathematical subjects.

We offer talks on careers in mathematics and related subjects on campus or in schools careers conventions.

Short Courses for Teachers

These courses are designed to help teachers keep in touch with new developments in mathematics teaching. The sessions support teachers in areas of mathematics and statistics relevant to the current secondary mathematics curriculum such as workshops on data handling and analysis and using ICT in teaching mathematics in schools.

Further Mathematics Network

"Further Mathematics Network" initiative is funded by DfES and aims to enhance provision of further mathematics nationally through creating regional Further Mathematics Centres.

IMSAS is involved in the Further Mathematics Network in Kent. Study and revision days for further mathematics groups are scheduled each term at the Canterbury Campus.

New "Mathematics with Education" Degree Programme

From September 2007, IMSAS is planning to offer a new "Mathematics with Education" degree programme in partnership with Christ Church University. The three-year programme will provide a fast track to gaining QTS in mathematics.
