The annual conference of the BPPA (formerly NPAPA) is one of the longest running and best attended postgraduate philosophy conferences in the UK. We aim to offer the brightest and most eager philosophy postgraduates a forum in which to present their own work and critically respond to that of others.
To display the full variety of postgraduate philosophy that is practised in the UK the conference has no particular theme and this year’s BPPA Conference will, for the first time, be open to submissions from the continental tradition of philosophy.
Rather than imposing an increasingly artificial separation between analytic and continental philosophy, the BPPA aims to allow all postgraduate philosophers stripes equal access to the conference, and to select papers based on what we hope are the neutral standards of clarity, rigour, significance, and suitability for a general philosophical audience. That this can be done is exemplified in the work of Prof. Kenneth Westphal, whom we are pleased to announce as the keynote speaker.
Submissions are limited to postgraduates in the UK and Ireland. Attendance, however, is open to all students.
Each presentation will be followed by a short discussion/question-answer-session. The best paper will be awarded with a prize.
In addition to the philosophical discussions we furthermore plan to incorporate workshops that provide information and help for some of the most urgent concerns of future academics. For this conference Dr. Simon Kirchin (co-founder of the BPPA) has already agreed to give a workshop on career-development.
The conference will be held from the 27th-29th of June 2008 at the
University of Kent in Canterbury.
A map of the campus is available here: http://www.kent.ac.uk/maps/canterbury/find-campus.html
The conference will be open to all postgraduate students who pay the registration and accommodation fee of £60. This fee entitles delegates to accommodation and catering over two nights.
