Linguistics is broadly defined as the scientific study of language, which means that it seeks to explain why language is the way that it is rather than simply describe it. Thus, it asks fundamental questions about the human condition: are we all, for example, genetically predisposed to learn language? How is language used/abused by themedia? How does our linguistic and cultural background affect communication?
The English Language and Linguistics (ELL) section forms part of the School of European Culture and Languages (SECL). It comprises teaching colleagues who are research active in various linguistic areas, such as language variation and change, syntax, psycholinguistics, morphology, semantics, pragmatics, literary stylistics, English as a world language, language acquisition, English language teaching, and Romance linguistics.
Housed in Rutherford College, the ELL section is a minute’s walk away from the well-stocked linguistics shelves of the Templeman Library, from the Gulbenkian theatre and cafe, and from the Cornwallis building where the main SECL seminar rooms can be found.
