School of Physical Sciences

Location

The offices and laboratories of the Functional Materials Group occupy Floors 2 and 3 of the Ingram Building, which houses the School of Physical Sciences.  Since 2001, this School has benefitted from £3.2m of investment by the university for refurbished offices and laboratories.  The Ingram Building, being adjacent to the Biosciences and Electronics departments, is part of the science and technology cluster at University of Kent.  The FMG is also within 800m of the university library, cafe, sports centre and theatre.  The campus is an attractive parkland site 2 miles from historic Canterbury city centre. It's closeness to London (60 miles) and the English Channel (20 miles) favours research links with other universities and enterprises in the Southeast and in France. Background

From the beginning, interdisciplinarity was a cornerstone of the University of Kent’s teaching and research programmes. The inauguration of the Centre for Materials Research (CMR) in 1989 was part of this tradition as it brought together the common research interests of the Materials Chemistry and the Condensed Matter and Materials Physics Groups.  During a departmental review in 2003, the Functional Materials Group (FMG) was inaugurated as the successor to the CMR.  FMG benefitted from £0.6 m investment under SRIF 1.  In the group's first three years, it won another £1.4 m of new research funding, In the period 2001-2009 the academics in FMG published over 300 papers which have been sited over 2500 times
