There is growing concern that the widespread use of refined hydrocarbons, eg. in transport and the chemical industry, will lead to long term damage to the environment. A variety of sensitive optical methods exist for the determination of low level pollutants, new techniques were investigated in order that these methods could be exploited outside the laboratory.
