Keep in touch
Inform: Information Services Newsletter
March 2009
To help improve the way that staff keep in touch with one another, Microsoft Office Communications Server is currently being piloted by Information Services.
From the convenience of your desk the system offers:
- secure instant messaging
- presence: ability to view availability of colleagues
- voice/video conferencing: online meetings with multiple participants.
People have found many different uses for the technology and everyone has their own favourite features.
Over the next year we hope to extend the system to a fully supported service, capable of supporting all members of staff. This will include support for audio and video, a web client and support for a mobile client.
Subject to a successful trial this summer, future work will include integration with the campus telephone network. Benefits of this include the ability to route calls to wherever you are logged on, and to deliver voicemail/call notifications into your ConnectMail inbox.
The service will offer staff the ability to improve efficiency and reduce travel costs by making people easier to contact and enabling real-time online meetings.
