Templeman Library new Core Text Collection

Inform: Information Services Newsletter

June 2008

In response to user feedback indicating difficulty in locating and accessing material on reading lists we will be launching a new open access Core Text Collection at the start of the next academic year.

The Collection will be located in Level 1 West and will contain core material on reading lists, including material in the short loan collection, one week loans and DVD/videos.

The new collection will be managed through the use of new radio-frequency technology and students will be able to browse all material and have access throughout library opening hours. The careful tracking of the material in the collection and the introduction of our new reading list system will allow the collection to respond to the changing needs of its users and also provide valuable information about the use of core resources to teaching staff.

Implementation this summer

  • Level 1 West periodicals will temporarily be stored off-site while space and shelving are prepared for the new collection. A subsidised document delivery service will be provided for users who require access to articles within this range of periodicals in the interim period. On their return these periodicals will be re-located into the vacated Short Loan Collection space and the basement store.
  • The current journal display will be temporarily disbanded, with current journals being shelved adjacent to back runs. It is anticipated that re-instatement of the current journal display should be completed by February 2009.
  • Shelf tightening of the whole library stock is required to close the gaps created by moving one week loans in to the new collection.

This work will happen over the summer vacation so that the Collection is ready for the start of the Autumn Term. The main building works will take place during the first six weeks of the vacation.
