2008 Research Assessment Exercise
In the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise announced on 18 December 2008, 55% of research carried out in DICE was judged as world leading (4*) or internationally excellent (3*). The University of Kent ’s research profile has also risen to become a top 30 university.
In their feedback, DICE’s sub-panel commended our ‘research focus on making significant changes to international policies and practices’ and noted our‘unconventional interdisciplinary teams’. The sub-panel also noted our ‘excellent international and practitioner links’, and ‘significant international policy and advisory work’. The ‘training support and interdisciplinary, inter-institutional and international supervision of students’ was felt to be excellent. Furthermore, ‘prestigious awards for DICE students’ were noted.
This was DICE’s first independent submission to the Earth Systems and Environmental Sciences (Unit of Assessment 17) sub-panel that includes Conservation Science along with many more traditional hard science subjects. Compared with joint submissions of previous years, the young and evolving research unit within DICE has made considerable progress in its research profile since 2001. Had the same methodology been used as in 2001, DICE’s 2008 submission would have gained a top 5* as compared with contributing to 5’s in Anthropology and Law in 2001.
