Academic staff

DICE has 9 core academic staff who both run research programmes and undertake teaching. Additional research staff have appointments based on research grants. Additional teaching staff convene modules on certain teaching programmes.

Dr Peter Bennett
Reader in Biodiversity and Evolutionary Ecology
Research interests: Evolution, ecology and conservation of birds; global biodiversity hotspots; evolution and ecology of extinction risk; causes of mortality in cetaceans and amphibians.

Dr Richard Bodmer
Reader in Conservation Ecology
Research interests: Population dynamics and community ecology of rainforest mammals; community-based conservation, sustainable use, wildlife management in tropical ecosystems.

Prof Richard Griffiths
Professor in Biological Conservation
Research interests: Ecology and conservation of amphibians and reptiles; effects of environmental change on threatened species; survey and monitoring protocols for biodiversity.

Dr Jim Groombridge
Senior Lecturer in Biodiversity Conservation
Research interests: Conservation of highly threatened bird species; conservation genetics of small populations; parrot conservation, genetics and biogeography.

Professor Stuart Harrop
Professor of Wildlife Management Law
Research interests: Law and policy relating to conservation, biodiversity and genetic resources; rights of indigenous people; intellectual property.

Professor Douglas MacMillan
Professor in Conservation and Applied Resource Economics
Research interests: Economics and wildlife conservation; environmental modelling; economics of collaboration in land and wildlife management; Forest Resource Economics.

Dr Helen Newing
Lecturer in Biodiversity Conservation
Research interests: The effects of conservation and protected areas on rural development; participatory approaches to natural resource use; the role of NGOs; conservation and tourism.

Dr David Roberts
Lecturer in Biodiversity Conservation
Research interests: Species detectability and extinction, and orchid ecology; the response of orchids to climate change, epiphyte community ecology and modelling epiphyte seed dispersal.
