Working Well With Others: Using Cultural Intelligence to Strengthen Your PhD Experience

Doing a PhD at the University of Kent means becoming part of a culturally diverse community of researchers, supervisors, participants, and peers. This interactive three-hour workshop introduces Cultural Intelligence (CQ)—the ability to navigate cultural and behavioural differences with confidence—and explores how it can support you throughout your research journey.

Through discussions, activities, and real-world scenarios, the workshop examines how cultural differences shape communication, expectations, and relationships in academic life. You will explore how to approach research in culturally sensitive and ethical ways, work more effectively with supervisors, participants, and fellow students, and better understand how your own cultural perspectives influence your interactions. The session also looks at navigating cultural differences across a range of contexts, including fieldwork, lab environments, writing groups, and everyday student life.By the end of the workshop, you will have developed practical tools and greater self-awareness to help you feel more confident, adaptable, and resilient. The session is designed to support you in building inclusive and respectful relationships that enhance both your wellbeing and your academic progress, helping you to thrive as part of Kent’s global research community.
